ARTreat is an EU project which will provide a patient-specific computational model of the cardiovascular system, used to improve the quality of prediction for the atherosclerosis progression. Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease that starts with intima alterations. Moreover, it is now well accepted that the early stage of the process is the result of interactions between plasma low density lipoproteins that filtrate through the endothelium into the intima, cellular components (monocytes/macrophages, endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells) and the extracellular matrix of the arterial wall. Computer modeling allows bioengineering researchers and clinical doctors to better understand and predict the plaque formation and development in the arteries for specific patients. The aim of ARTreat Workshop is to bring together experts from both bioprocess modeling and clinical arena, in order to discuss and present the latest developments on the atherosclerotic plaque formation modeling process.

Nenad Filipovic is Professor of Biomechanics and Informatics at the Mechanical Engineering Faculty of the University of Kragujevac (Serbia) and Research Associated at Harvard School of Public Health at University of Harvard (USA). His research interests are in the area of fluid mechanics, coupled problems; fluid-structure interaction, heat transfer; biofluid mechanics; biomechanics, multi-scale modeling, discrete modeling, molecular dynamics, computational chemistry and
bioprocess modeling. He is Director of Center for Bioengineering at University of Kragujevac and leads joint research projects with Harvard University and University of Texas in area of bio-nano-medicine computer simulation. He also leads a number of national projects in area of bioengineering. He is a Managing Editor for Journal of Serbian Society for Computational Mechanics and member of European Society of Biomechanics (ESB) and European Society for Artificial Organs (ESAO).
Prof. Oberdan Parodi CNR Director of Research. He received a Medical Doctor Degree from the University of Pisa in 1972 and he majored in Cardiology in 1975 and in Nuclear Medicine in 1982. Current position: Director of the CNR Clinical Physiology Institute (IFC) – Milan. Since 1997: Director Struttura Complessa IFC CNR, Cardiovascular Department, Ospedale Niguarda, Milan. His main fields of interest are measurements of coronary dynamics by imaging techniques, aimed at
exploring pathophysiology of coronary microcirculation and myocardial blood flow in man, clinical studies on myocardial metabolism and perfusion in heart failure, coronary artery disease, cardiac transplantation. He coordinated numerous clinical trials on cardiovascular drugs and evaluated novel biomarkers in heart failure. Principal investigator of numerous CNR research projects. Responsible for the CNR National Project “Malattie Cardiopolmonari”. Coordinator of European Community projects: Human Capital and Mobility 1995-1997; PACOMIP Esprit-Capri 1996-1998; end-user CaRDIS, GROWTH 2000, FP5 (2000-2003); scientific manager and RU coordinator of STREP VPH2 (ICT of FP7), scientific manager and PU coordinator of IP ARTreat (ICT of FP7). Principal investigator of targeted research projects, Italian Health Ministry 1996, 1999, 2001, 2007 (APICE). Coordinator of CADASIL Project, AIFA 2006. Member of numerous Editorial Boards. Member of the EC PET Task Force. Author of more than 300 original papers, reviews and book chapters.
